Notes: Found under bay and coast live oak, also possibly with X. subtometosus. By 12.05.06 there was no sign that they’d ever been present but one was found pulled up and discarded, revealing a pinched stipe base.

X. dryophilus seems likely
The new photos look a lot like Xerocomus dryophilus to me. If they stipes have a pinched based I would be confident in that id. I’m not confident that the first photo is of the same species. I have seen different species of Xerocomus growing together. None of them look like Boletus regius to me. It’s generally larger with tighter pores.
