Recognized by sight: By far the most common Phellinus on aspen, although this specimen is a bit odd in that it shelves out quite a bit. Usually P tremular is less shelving.

Well, I’m not sure what they are supposed to look like, but I must have seen 20-30 on the aspen between 9,500 and 10,000 feet, and they all looked like this one.
