Find:
Observation: Cortinarius alboviolaceus (Pers.) Fr. (11402)

When: 2008-09-21
Collection location: Forest near Elgin Street, Pembroke, Ontario, Canada [Click for map]
Who: Paul Derbyshire (Twizzler)
No herbarium specimen

Species Lists:
Fall Mushrooms of Eastern Ontario (54)
Mushrooms of Eastern Ontario (51)

Notes: I found another big cluster of these growing today, in the same general part of the woods (a damp, mixed pine/spruce/maple/birch area about 300m in diameter) as several previous C. alboviolaceus observations this September (obs. 11097, 11222, 11242, and 11401).

And I got some great photos!

Photos 1-2: A mid-sized specimen, from the side. The cortina can clearly be seen, brown with spores.
Photo 3: Area with cluster (sorry, dubious focus, but shows main grouping; there were several more scattered outside that main grouping, not in the frame of that image but close by, including the mushroom in the first two photos).
Photo 4: Same mushroom as in first two photos, but from nearly straight up.
Photo 5: A small one (not seen in photo 3) upended to show gills and cortina, not yet brown with spores in this immature specimen.
Photo 6: Same mushroom as in first two photos, knocked over to photograph gills.
Photo 7: The biggest one in photo 3, upended.

Note the gill color progression in the last three photos — from lilac, to lilac with brown tinging the sides (but not edges) of the gills, to completely brown sides (but still lilac edges) as the spores develop.
