Observation: Chalciporus piperatoides (Smith & Thiers) Baroni & Both (11706)

When: 2008-09-30
Collection location: SE Portland, Multnomah Co., Oregon, USA [Click for map]
Who: Daniel B. Wheeler (Tuberale)
No herbarium specimen

Notes: Fd. in grass near Quercus palustra in landscaped grounds for a hospital. Stipe with reddish stripes descending from the cap, but lighter towards the base. No cracking on the cap, and specimens (about 15) pretty tightly bunched together. Probably the largest group of these I’ve seen.

Recognized by sight: The shape of the spores and the red-blush on the stipe look more like Xerocomus than Chalciporus to me.

Summary: Hard to tell…

The photo doesn’t so much, hard to tell here. I didn’t think Chalciporus has a red stipe like that, or olive-yellow pores. Isn’t it bitter? Did you check the taste? (I shouldn’t post this stuff from the top of my head…)
