Fund: Amanita pekeoides G. S. Ridl. (16409)

Wann: 2009-01-18
Wächst auch dort: Auckland, New Zealand [Landkarte: hier klicken]
Wer: Michael W. (inski)
Kein Herbarium-Exemplar

Anmerkungen: This Amanita species belongs in section Vaginatae, it is an unusual species that lacks a partial veil, also the lamellae have a distinctive dark margin, it is commonly known as Socked flycap.
Sometimes the universal veil tears apart and leaves membranous fragments on the pileus, there is also a white form of this species!

I am a little surprised to see that you photo is from Auckland. I only know if from beech forest which are not common this far north. Would you like to give up its exact location?

Zusammenfassung: Great!

I will extract my type study data on the three “forms” of pekeoides and post as a PDF linked to the pekeoides web page through the “Technical details” link near the top of the page. You images will appear on the page in my standard size (250 pixels high). A link will be provided to MO so that the original size images can be viewed. I’m using the Photoshop auto contrast to bright your images a bit. Please tell me if you think that the altered images don’t seem to represent the colors as you saw them.

My mailing address is

Zusammenfassung: Thankyou Rod,

I thought you would be interested in this, you are welcome to use the images in your study and yes I can send you a dried specimen, email me your details and I will send it out!
From what I gather, there are three variants,(please correct me if I’m wrong) this specimen seems to be Amanita pekeoides G. S. Ridl. sensu stricto, there is also a white variety and individuals that exhibit a friable volva!
It would be great if you could put something together to add here and to the Amanita studies page.
I actually thought of you when I discovered this specimen and made a careful collection!
Your enthusiasm for this most interesting genus spurs me on and I hope to make many collections in the near future, I will be happy to contribute to your studies and hopefully learn a lot!
Thanks,
Michael..

Zusammenfassung: Wonderful, Michael!

Hey, this is terrific! Can you possibly get me a dried specimen? Can I use some of your images on the species page for A. pekeoides on the Amanita Studies web site?

I have done a type study of this species and of the variants that Geoff Ridley identified. I’ll see if I can put something together for comment here and/or an addition to the Amanita Studies relevant pages.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a color illustration of this species before.

I’m delighted. Section Vaginatae is one of my main areas of work in Amanita. Another unpublished project is a second set of type studies in the section and a large key to all of the species in Vaginatae for which I have at least moderately reliable data.

You spur me on.

Very best,

Rod
