Collection location: Los Trancos Preserve, Palo Alto, California, USA [Click for map]
Who: Douglas Smith (douglas)
No herbarium specimen

Notes: These are kinda neat. I haven’t seen this species up there before, but I also found one really old one near by, so I am pretty sure about the species of these buttons. But also I had never seen buttons of this species before, and there are some neat features. The “egg” doesn’t seem to have any complete universal veil, that is only seen as the crumblies on the forming caps. The left over “egg” tissue will eventually become scally rings on the mature stipe. In the second photo, the forming partial veil tissue is bright yellow, which also points to the species.

Summary: Changed name

Ok, I kinda wondered about the name spelling myself. I’ve changed the name here.

Summary: francheti vs franchetii vs franchetti

The specific epithet is often misspelled as francheti because of Bull. Soc. bot. Fr.: 91 (1881). In 1986 Jenkins kept the error in Amanita of North America**. Arora also has the error in All That the Rain Promises and More… The correct name according to the botanical code should have two i’s, not two t’s.
