Public Description (default)
When: 1995-05-15
Collection location: Pacific Palisades, California, USA [Click for map]
Who: Nathan Wilson (nathan)
No herbarium specimen

Notes: The date is only accurate to the month.

Found in a small canyon near the beach on a foray with Nancy Smith-Weber and Greg Wright. It’s been suggested that this might be Pulcherricium caeruleum, but the photos I’ve seen of that are distinctly blue not purple.

Species Lists:
Crusts: Fungi with a resupinate or flat sheeting habit (Corticioid s.l. + others)

Recognized by sight: That’s my best guess. The Byssocorticium we have in the midwest is exactly the same blue, but there is no brown in the center, which I assume are mature parts. Members of the genus Byssocorticium are ectomycorrhizal (surprise!).

Summary: Glad to hear a new suggestion

I’ll definitely look into Byssocorticium some more. The photos I found from a quick google search were a bit more compelling than the ones I’ve seen of Pulcherricium. What I really need to do is get back out in the field and look under more logs!

Summary: Thanks, Tom!

What a blessing to have Tom on this list to put names to our often forgotten polypores and crusts. We’ll be seeing more of these as our Western season winds down!
