Notes: Location: 35°12’59.44"N, 85°54’30.99"W , el. 444 m, Shake Rag Hollow.
Substrate and habitat: growing about 2 m above the ground on the trunk of a slender tree, in cove hardwood forest below the western escarpment of the Cumberland Plateau.
Identification: This may be Physcia stellaris, but I need to go back for a better look. Spot tests would help.
Note added on 02 May 2009: Gary Perlmutter comments that “Your image is right in being a Physcia. It could be P. stellaris, or P. pumilior, which is smaller and with white bumps (best seen under a dissecting scope).”
