These wood-loving psilocybes fruit in the spring in the eastern US, while P. cyanescens is a west coast species that fruits in the fall.
There are rumors of mating compatibility between the two taxa.
When I first found these, I thought they were P. caerulipes, but samples sent to Guzman were identified as P. ovoideocystidiata.
Spore size and shape, along with the sometimes present annulus, are cited as distinguishing characters for this taxon.
As far as I know, no mating studies have been published.
