Collection location: Los Trancos Preserve, Palo Alto, California, USA [Click for map]
Who: Douglas Smith (douglas)
No herbarium specimen

Notes: These looked like small non-discript brown Inocybes, although slightly larger in stature then other brown Inocybes I have been finding. But the scent of these is fairly strong as kinda a cross between dried fruit/fermenting fruit/and a little cinnamon (maybe). Also the stipe of the yonger one here shows reddish/pinkish staining, and when I cut it in half it slowly started to show pinkish stains. So, that matches the description in Arora.

Summary: I. fradans

The most common ‘matsutake’/fruit scented Inocybe in California is generally referred to as I. fradans. The Swiss books shows a picture that is a pretty good match to what I find most commonly. According to the Swiss books I. pyriodora is a synonym for I. fradans. There are other Inocybes with the same odor, but they generally have some distinctive coloration (blue-green tones, a grey tomentose cap, reddish tones etc.).
