Observation: Entoloma Fr. ex P. Kumm. (2131)

When: 2007-01-28
No herbarium specimen

Notes: Found in an open, grassy area near Quercus agrifolia. Pileus is 38 mm wide and the total height is 4.5 cm. The stipe either bruises brownish or there’s a coating that comes off when you touch it. Pileus is slightly moist. Solitary. Notice the large mass of what I think are mycelial threads at the base of the stipe in the 2nd image.

Returned on 2/1/07, curious to see if the gills were mottled. They aren’t. Just plain beige. The pileus is now all one color.

Panaeolus acuminatus

Panaeolus acuminatus looks very close and changes color when dry. The hygrophanous change starts on the umbo and works toward the margin. The gill spacing is not wide, but one photo does tend to look that way from the angle of the camera. The photo in the mirror shows close gills.

I’m pretty sure the mottling on the gills is camera noise.

Panaeolus?

Hard to tell from the images. The image of the underside kind of looks like it has mottled gills which are characteristic of Panaeolus, but it also might just be CCD noise in your camera. The wide-spaced gills are not typical of that genus. Really need a spore print and maybe some scope work to figure that one out.
