Notes: The habitat is pine forest (mixed Lodgepole, Pinus contorta subsp. murrayana and Ponderosa, Pinus ponderosa). All caps where under pine duff.

Recognized by sight: Definitely a Russula. Taste was mild and flesh was firm. Stipe bruised brown when scratched. Spores yellowish.

I think you’re right that it is in that group, but I don’t think it’s actually R. xerampelina. It was also kind of on the small side for a shrimper. I expect to get a chance to look at the spores over the weekend and will have access to some literature.

Summary: There are a lot of different species and forms in this group

and it’s correct that very fresh specimens do not yet smell like fish. Firm context and mild taste and browning of the stipe would also point to this group.
