Notes:
Kinda reminds me of Gyroporus but I think its just young. In an oak/hickory/poplar forest. Was not bitter, although maybe I remember a nasty aftertaste.

The stipes are indeed smooth and glabrous and streaky-brown, which is consistent with X. affine. X. purpureum is similar in appearance but the color is reddish-brown. The wrinkled caps here are blackish with some purple mixed in close to the margin. I think proposing Xanthoconium as an alternate generic hypothesis makes sense here.
