I’m honestly not even sure if this is a fungus. It was found along the Appalachian Trail between Panther Gap and Snowbird Gap, NC. The pic of the flower is from the tree it was growing on.

Recognized by sight: Parasite on flame azalea in southern US. Other species have gone under this name but I feel fairly confident that this is the real deal.
