an Amanita from section Vaginatae that has lost all evidence of the universal veil (volva). It’s easy to imagine that the basal volva would be lost in the sandy substrate. Also, there are some types of Vaginatae that feature basal volva that more-or-less disintegrates as the mushroom matures. But, the feature that really seems unusual for an Amanita is the notched attachment of the gills with decurrent teeth running down the stipe.
