Notes: Although this mushroom may or may not be included in the Lepiota genus, I chose to continue to call it L. naucina because of the referrals I have in my guides. However this mushroom may well be known to some as Leucoagaricus naucinus of which I’m not familiar with the genus.
Found fruiting in turf and grassy areas in the Fall, the “Smooth Lepiota” can appear almost overnight in large amounts. I have spoken with people that do consume this mushroom, however I choose not to partake.

Created: 2007-06-19 20:50:07 By: Nathan Wilson (nathan) Summary: The ‘correct’ name is Leucoagaricus leucothites I’ve added a synonym link to Leucoagaricus leucothites for Lepiota naucina so this collection will show up on searches for either name (as well as Leucoagaricus naucinus). The main characteristic that separates Lepiota from Leucoagaricus is the structure of the upper surface of the cap. The result of this difference shows up visually as scales in the case of Lepiota and either a smooth cap or a streaked cap for Leucoagaricus. My understanding is this distinction is well supported by DNA evidence as well so this species is like to remain in Leucoagarius going forward.
