Observation: Craterellus cornucopioides (L.) Pers. (3704)

When: 2006-09-26
Collection location: Elgin County, Ontario, Canada [Click for map]
Who: Rex (Rex Bartlett)
No herbarium specimen

Notes: fruiting in my region near American Beech trees with a tendency to produce on slopes. Moss may or may not be present. Publications suggest that C. cornucopioides & C. fallax are the same, and that C. fallax is no longer valid. These images,as true to life as possible clearly show distinct variations in this mushroom. It was suggested to me that the beige/tan specimens were just older thus the color difference, but in retrospect, I believe the lighter colored mushrooms are younger.

Summary: Intermediate with the ‘C. konradii’ form?

The lighter ones kind of look like a darker, dinger version of the yellow/orange form that has been called C. konradii. I’ve certainly seen fresh young ones that are solid black.
