Observation: Agaricus xanthodermus Genev. (4245)

When: 2007-09-29
Collection location: Santa Rosa, Sonoma Co.,California, USA [Click for map]
Who: Debbie Drechsler (debdrex)
No herbarium specimen

Notes: Found under juniper surrounded by irrigated lawn. There were several but most were decayed.
Older specimen was 8cm tall, pileus 6.2cm wide, stipe 1.1cm wide. It’s gills were originally nearly white with a tinge of gray but overnight turned pale mauve brown with orange stains. Gills were free. No yellow stain or odor. Note the orange stain on the annulus.
Younger specimen stained yellow on stipe (when cut) and pileus (when cut and rubbed) instantly and briefly. No discernible odor other than store mushroom smell when I broke the base of the stipe.
