Observation: Coprinellus sp. (4448)

When: 2007-10-19
Collection location: Menlo Park, San Mateo Co., California, USA [Click for map]
Who: Douglas Smith (douglas)
Herbarium specimen available

Species Lists:
Stanford Campus (12)

Notes: O, I found these in some landscaping, under some pine trees, where there was lots of duff of pine needles, also bits of woody debris. There were lots of Psathyrella candolleana around in the grass, so at first, I thought these were more of that, they were about the same color, shape and size. Except these were in tight bunches, and there was many dozens of caps. When I picked them, the cap flesh is thiner, and the surface is deeply striate, and the older ones are turning black, although not as much as other Coprinellus I’ve seen (not really turning into the black goo). If you look close you can see a bit of the flaky covering of the Coprinellus in the center tops of the caps, but just a bit, the rest must fall off pretty quick.

They are like Coprinellus micaceus, but then again, not really. They are taller, the cap lighter, thiner, smoother, and less black goo happening. So, I don’t know, are these another Coprinellus sp.?
