Observation: Gymnopilus sp. (4534)

When: 2007-10-26
Collection location: Madison Heights, Pasadena, Los Angeles Co., California, USA [Click for map]
Who: Jason Hollinger (jason)
No herbarium specimen

Notes: This is a dry old specimen, unfortunately. It is entirely possible it once had an evanescent or fibrillose veil.

GEN small mushroom, several in lawn (possibly on wood chips)
ST: 60×4mm, solid, curvy, fibrous, tough, bruising conspicuously blue esp. near base
CAP: 15mm wide, convex, pale golden, smooth with some v thin brownish scattered fibrillose scales
FLESH: 1-2mm, whitish, hard when dry
GILL: vivid golden, decurrent
SPORE: print vivid rusty orange (from dusting on gills and upper stalk), textured, ellip, 8.2-9.4×5.1-5.6um
NOTES: More notes here.

The color of the spore print seems to strongly suggest Gymnopilus despite apparently growing in a lawn.
