Who: Douglas Smith (douglas)
Herbarium specimen reported

Notes: Found and id’ed by others at the SMG meeting.

Looked at the under the scope, to get some info from a European collection for comparison. Of course this is soo variable, who knows if this will matter much.

The first micro-shot is of the cap surface at 400x in Meltzer’s. The cap surface here can be seem to be cellular, so it is a hymeniform, not a cutis. There was no gelatin seen, or pileocystidia.

The second micro-shot is of a gill edge at 400x in Meltzer’s. Here cheilocystidia can be easily seen, well spaced on a fertile edge. Also pleurocystidia were obs., as equally common and well spaced, and similar shaped. The shape is lageniform with blunt apex.

The third micro-shot is of spores from the stipe apex at 1000x in KOH. The spores are ellipsoid, smooth, tan, truncate with a clear germ pore. They are almost like Psilocybe spores, but less pigmented. An ave. size on 7 spores is 7.9 × 5.2 um.

Not sure I will keep looking at Agrocybes, but here is some info from a European collection. Mostly for Ron to use in comparison with his studies of Californian Agrocybes.

Summary: How exciting! Another Agrocybe praecox…maybe?

I’ll put it on my priority list…somewhere around # 896.
