Observation: Cortinarius sp. (4569)

When: 2007-10-30
Collection location: Clinton, Whidbey Island, Island Co., Washington, USA [Click for map]
Who: Sam Linse (BearwoodSam)
No herbarium specimen

Notes: Found in small groups and alone in mature mixed coniferous second growth forest of Douglas Fir, Western Red Cedar, Western Hemlock.

Cap when young is purple brown, and ‘draped’. I believe it may be Cortinarius as there appear to be fine white fibers connecting the young cap to the stipe.

Gills are irregular, uneven, not running down the stalk, tan and a spore print is coming soon.
Mature cap has draped undulations like the young cap and is the same purple brown color with some brown discoloration.

Stipe is white and silky with rusty remains of fibers.

Spore print is dark brown.
