Summary: I vote Hypoxylon, too.
In my (Western) experience, Daldinia does not look “wet”, even after it has been watered. I believe your fungus may in fact be different. Daldinia is an extremely hard fungus, almost immediately becoming quite solid and approaching knot-hole hard. At least it appeared that way while I was growing it on shiitake logs, mostly Red alder, in WA.

Summary: Daldinia or Hypoxylon sp.
Take a look at Tom Volk’s page on Daldinia:
http://botit.botany.wisc.edu/...
But there is also the similar Hypoxylon in the west:
http://mykoweb.com/CAF/species/Hypoxylon_thouarsianum.html
And I don’t know how to tell the difference, or what might be found in Georgia. But you can start with these pages, and read up on it, and get back to us on what these might be.
