Observation: Polyporus radicatus (4731)

When: 2005-08-22
Collection location: Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania, USA [Click for map]
Who: Jim Tunney (Jim Tunney)
No herbarium specimen

Notes: Found in Moon Township Park on a steep hillside with loose rocks under mixed woods, Oaks and Maple mostly. I tried eating this, it is somewhat bitter. I collected it again a year later, in August 2006 in West Virginia that were younger and they tasted pretty good.

I first thought it was Polyporus badius, P. radicatus is fleshier than P. badius and the cap feels like suede.
