Observation: Boletus abieticola Thiers. (49441)
About Boletus abieticola Thiers.
Public Description (default) [Edit]
When: 2010-08-01
Collection location: Lassen National Forest, Tehama Co., California, USA [Click for map]
Who: Herman Brown (brownthird)
No herbarium specimen

Notes: I first IDed these as a B. appendiculatus, but Dimitar convinced me that is was a B. abieticola because of the season found (mid July) and habitat (under red fir).
Bright yellow stipe and pore tubes, crisp, white flesh when cut, blueing slowly mainly in the cap, with very yellow flesh when cooked.
Delicious, one of my favorites

Summary: in addition to the unique fir habitat…

the subtly fibrillose/appressed scale texture of the cap is also distinctive.
