Summary: The reason why…

I think this is spadiceus and not tenax is the blue bruising on the pores. B/R/B mentions this in their description of spadiceus. But the account of tenax is for the pores to bruise “slightly cinnamon red.”

Also, the habitat for tenax is given as “near or under oak and pine.” Perhaps it was not the intention of the authors to have it taken this way, but this sounds to me like tenax favors oak/pine mixes. There are no oak trees at Adirondack Loj.

Otherwise, this specimen looks an awful lot like the picture of texax in B/R/B.

Summary: Habitat…

mainly a mix of birch, maple, and various conifers. Typical Adirondack woods, no oak. Found on trail that goes around Heart Lake at about 2100’ asl. I’m adding three additional pics.
