Summary: Hydnellum sp.
We have five purple species of Hydnellum in California. Three have a strong odor, two do not. One of the best ID characteristics for this group is the color of the interior flesh in the stalk. Using only the photos, I would tend to call it Hydnellum

Summary: Did you smell it?
H. suaveolens is supposed to be very fragrant. Without seeing inside or seeing a more mature specimen, I don’t know how to distinguish between these two species.

this was very velvety and didn’t appear to be funnel like to me.
the undersides did appear to have the ‘tooth’ like appearance.
i think i like the Hydnellum suaveolens description a bit better even
