Notes: small mushroom, great many small clusters scattered on big hickory blown down winter before last, in moist hardwood valley, interesting odor ST: to 30×5mm, deep brown to yellowish at v top with some reddish tints where it changes color, whole thing minutely whitish puberulent giving it a kind of sheen, densely brown shaggy at and near base, nearly solid if not completely, tough and rubbery, not breaking at all and springing right back into shape CAP: up to 30-40mm wide, broadly convex, smooth, shiny, rich reddish brown almost throughout to yellowish near margin, tacky now but clearly viscid earlier (one leaf was stuck permanently to a large specimen) FLESH: pale yellowish, v thin to quite thick in center (up to 3mm thick), not fragile but quite flexible VEIL: none GILL: v notched to almost free, pale yellow to v slightly reddish tinted, 4mm deep, clean, straight, unbranched, avg distance SPORE: print whitish to v faintly yellowish
Very confident of this ID. Yes, in fact, the odor is much like the enoki one finds in Japanese markets. It still baffles me that the cultivated form bears no resemblance to the wild form…
