Armillaria cepistipes
Annulus normal aging cobwebby, sometimes appearing double; Cap light brown to brown, disc with dark scales, margin glabrous and striate, ±hygrophanous; Stalk yellowish, fibrillose, clavate; Solitary to clusters of 2-3; Uncommon; Coastal not montane.

Armillaria mellea
Annulus thick & felty, white, often with a yellow edge; Cap honey yellow, center darker than margin, smooth, nonstriate in age; Base of each talk pointed; Caespitose (10-30); Hardwoods & rarely conifers; Uncommon.

Summary: How do you differentiate…

…between A. cepistipes and A. mellea? These look remarkably like some that I’ve been seeing in large numbers at Howarth Park and calling A. mellea.
