Observation: Pleurotus sp. (5401)

Alternative Name: Cheimonophyllum Singer
When: 2007-12-07
Collection location: Buttonwood, south Key Largo, Monroe Co., Florida, USA [Click for map]
Who: Jason Hollinger (pellaea)
Herbarium specimen available

Species Lists:
Mushrooms of Key Largo (39)

Notes: small gilled shelf on downed rotting hardwood log (fairly large: maybe dogwood, gumbo limbo or pigeon plum?)
ST: stubby and lateral
CAP: ~30mm wide, fan-shaped, whitish to pale brownish, smooth, dull, funnel-shaped, margin gracefully curled under
FLESH: whitish, less than 1mm, fragile
GILL: whitish, decurrent, close, clean, 3mm deep
SPORE: print creamy brownish—is that white or brown?? (see photo)

I was sure this was an oyster until I saw the spore print. Then I thought Crepidotus applanatus, but the gills conspicuously radiate from a single point in that genus. So I’m back to Pleurotus...
