Observation: Geastrum sp. (5405)

When: 2007-12-07
Collection location: Buttonwood, south Key Largo, Monroe Co., Florida, USA [Click for map]
Who: Jason Hollinger (pellaea)
Herbarium specimen available

Species Lists:
Mushrooms of Key Largo (39)

Notes: small earthstar, on small fallen stopper (Eugenia axillaris) (1-2” thick and bark still on), surrounded by copious white stains from mycelium
ST: short
CAP: 6-8mm wide, round, tapering at bottom to point of attachment
OUTSIDE SKIN: roughened, creamy whitish to brownish outside, splitting into 5 neat spreading segments when moist, rays ~6×4mm, dull brown and smooth inside with whitish bloom
INSIDE BALL: 1-2mm smaller, lt brown, pucker at tip with small well-defined pore, whitish around pore (v minute tomentum?), flabby and soft
SPORE: print dark smoky brown, spore mass is v diffuse and cottony

Clearly in the A. hygrometricus group due to hygroscopic behavior, but I don’t think it’s possible to be more specific without microscopic details of spores.

Excellent, Darvin has corrected me. I need to be more careful of using the “groups” in Demystified!

Summary: Geastrum

Geastrum also has many species with hygroscopic behavior. G. corollinum looks close but I didn’t find a record of it on wood. Nice photo on a log! Astraeus has only two species and this is not one of them.
