Observation: Hexagonia hydnoides (Sw.) M. Fidalgo (5788)

When: 2007-12-21
Collection location: Dove Creek Hammock, south Key Largo, Monroe Co., Florida, USA [Click for map]
Who: Jason Hollinger (pellaea)
No herbarium specimen

Species Lists:
Mushrooms of Key Largo (39)

Notes: I found some fresh ones finally. These are very common. I mostly see them on 1-2 cm wide limbs, but also on stumps and standing snags. They seem to prefer “soft” wood, such as dogwood (Piscidia piscipula), figs (Ficus spp.), and tamarind (both the exotic Tamarindus indica and the native Lysiloma latisiliquum), but I’ve also seen them on mahogany (Swietenia mahogani) and stopper (Eugenia spp.)—always dead, probably for over a year. They persist for some time, but less than a year (I don’t see any where I noted them last Christmas).

Used references: It’s been suggested by two people, but I was waiting for confirmation by someone in Miami which never happened.
