Observation: Albatrellus subrubescens (Murrill) Pouzar (6031)

When: 2008-01-11
Seen at: Santa Cruz Fungus Fair, Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz Co., California, USA [Click for map]
Who: Nathan Wilson (nathan)
No herbarium specimen

Notes: Identified by David Arora at the Santa Cruz Fungus Fair. It is a rare species, that he has seen before on the UCSC campus. It isn’t known where this specific collection came from.

Checking this against an actual description of A. subrubescens, it seems unlikely that this is the same species. In particular, that species is said to have a light yellow pileus and no mention is made of the black fibrils seen in this specimen. However, I couldn’t find a better name for it.
