Observation: Amanita magniverrucata Thiers & Ammirati (6046)

When: 2008-01-13
Collection location: Santa Cruz Fungus Fair, Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz Co., California, USA [Click for map]
Who: debbie viess (amanitarita)
No herbarium specimen

Notes: Note “yellow staining” on cap; also present on stipe.

This is a recent phenomenon, first noted by Rod Tulloss on the
East Coast. I have since observed it in several lepidella collections in the East Bay, as well as the Santa Cruz material brought to the recent Fair.
It was not observed in several lepidellas brought in on Sunday, currently unnamed but locally called Amanita “bonnydune-ensis”; this may be due to the freshness of the material.

Rod’s theory is that it is related to some sort of bacterial contamination.
Has any more research been done on this topic, Rod?
