Observation: Conocybe filaris (Fr.) Kühner (6264)

Preferred Name: Pholiotina rugosa (Peck) Sing.
When: 2008-02-02
Collection location: Burbank, Los Angeles Co., California, USA [Click for map]
Who: Nathan Wilson (nathan)
No herbarium specimen

Notes: Another fruiting in my compost heap. Identified by sight and consistently with the other similar collections I’ve made in my backyard. Doug Smith suspects this id may be wrong, but I don’t have another name to apply yet.

Images taken with various camera I have around the house. I’m particularly interested in the ‘mobile’ cameras – OLPC XO (first) and BlackBerry cellphone (third). Unfortunately neither are really good enough for id purposes.

Summary: Concybe filaris

I’m with Nathan on this one.
I’m just a wannabe C. filaris collector (haven’t seen it yet in the field) BUT on page 197 of Paul Stamets’ fine book, “Psilocybin Mushrooms of the World,” there are two photos of Conocybe filaris: one a (ahem) dead ringer for Nathan’s little guy, and the other one, same species, of fruit bodies that are far more delicate. Gosh, Nat and Allen, you’re BOTH right!

Summary: Another Conocybe

I agree with Douglas. I often find Conocybe filaris, and it is a much smaller and more fragile mushroom with a very thin stem and cap.
