Notes: These struck me as an intermediate between Cantharellus and Hydnum when I saw them.
They grew in strongly stipitate as well as clustered forms, as in the second photo.

Coker et al have a 1951 publication that covers this group – The Stipitate Hydnums of the Eastern United States.

It also occurs in North Carolina and Mexico.
