The surface of the stroma is ‘bumpy’ with ostioles of the the embedded peritheciums. Daldina tends to be a bit smoother. Check california fungi under Annulohypoxylon thouarsianum. The discussion of whether we in fact have Daldinia on the west coast is interesting. This merits further investigation for I’m sure I’ve seen the smoother ‘Daldinia’ in Washington.
