Σημειώσεις: Single specimen found growing in cottonwood leaf litter. Cap 2.8 cm; stem 4 cm long, 3 mm thick; with veil remnants. Spore print dull-brown, spores 8-9 × 5-6 microns. Some bumpy hyphae (cystidia?) on the gills.
A small brown-spored mushroom with veil, decurrent gills, and smooth spores—-what can it be?
Thanks a lot for your help. I don’t have access to Flora agaricina neerlandica, but have checked the description in Funga Nordica (Jan Vesterholt). Except for decurrent gills (“broadly attached” in the description), everything I could check matches. Will do a more detailed microscopy when I get a chance.
this looks most like what we used to call Pholiota oedipus, but has been migrating through all those different brown-spored genera, to end up in a genus of its own, with a new (old) species name.

those gills appear to be ever-so-slightly serrated. looks like there may have been an annulus as well. there’s a distinct raised ring of flesh mid-way up the stem.
