List of species in Inocybe (Fr.) Fr. (206)
When: 2011-01-16
Collection location: Los Trancos Preserve, Palo Alto, California, USA [Click for map]
Who: Douglas Smith (douglas)
Herbarium specimen reported

Notes: Found under live oak.

The first micro-shot is of the gill edge at 400x in KOH. The cheilocystidia are thick-walled, some-what rounded fusiod, and lightly encrusted on the ends. About half the cystidia have yellow pigments, the rest at least are yellow in the cells walls. Pleurocystidia also obs., similar to the cheilocystidia, and numerous.

The second micro-shot is of spores from the gill at 1000x in KOH. The spores are smooth, ellipsoid, somewhat pointed, and somewhat random… The ave. apr. size is 9 × 5 um.

Looking in the European sources, these don’t come up. In the Inocybe of Cali. by Nishida, she suggests Inocybe chrysocephala. The Inocybe Key of the Pacific NW, by O. Ceska, these come up rather clearly as Inocybe olympiana. I’ve had this name suggested to me in the past with yellowish colors, so I’m going with that. Although the habitat is probably weird, I don’t think they have live oak up in the Olympic Peninsula.
