Notes: A thus unofficially documented species of Psilocybe which keeps showing up in Northern California, Bay Area.
It is considerably less common than Ps. cyanescens or the the other undocumented “Ps. cyanofriscosa”.
Microscopically, these mushrooms resemble Ps. subaeruginascens, a species originally collected from Java, and subsequently described from Japan. However, the two collections are in limbo between being split into separate species, or sub-species. The Java collection would be Ps. septrionalis(=Ps. subaeruginascens var. septrionalis), and the Japanese collection remaining Ps. subaeruginascens based on Guzman’s working concept of the species.
The Bay Area collections match microscopically with the Japanese collections, however, they may very well be a separate species or sub-species.
On a side note, the macro morphology of some CA collections (this one especially) bear uncanny resemblance to the recently discovered east coast species Ps. ovoideocystidiata, though they do not seem to match on the micro level.
