Observation: Agaricus albolutescens Zeller (6877)

When: 2008-02-23
Collection location: Crescenta Valley Park, La Crescenta, Los Angeles Co., California, USA [Click for map]

Herbarium specimen available

Notes: Found within a 20 meters of observation 6878. I have doubts that these are actually examples of different species.

Proposed Names:   Propose New Name

Proposed Name User Community Vote
Agaricus silvicola (Vittad.) Peck   nathan    (2)
Recognized by sight: Had the classic almond odor, fairly heavy veil, white color and truncate stipe characteristic of what gets called A. silvicola in southern California. However, I’m not convinced that’s the right name.
Agaricus semotus Fr.   nathan    (2)
Recognized by sight: Proposing this name due to the relative small size and proximity to observation 6878.
Agaricus albolutescens Zeller   nathan    (2)   EyeEyes
Recognized by sight: Has the truncate stipe characteristic of this species. Odor, color, staining all match.

Summary: I'm calling these A. albolutescens

I’m calling these A. albolutescens, for now. This is based on the fact that Dr. Desjardin mentioned to me prelim. results that suggest that A. silvicola and A. albolutescens could be the same species. But this was prelim. stuff, not published, and in the hopes of simplifying, I’ve gone with A. albolutescens.

But it the spirit of confusing things, Dimi mentioned to me that there is another, I believe, European species that he had a name for, that had the same staining and odor, size and shape. But the character of this one was the widening at the base, and the fact that it bent to the side. Which is a character that we see in a lot of these guys in the coastal hills up and down CA.

I guess we should keep that in mind, but I’m going with A. albolutescens for now…
