Summary: An educated guess…[edit]

After going over the list of species in section Validae from Australia, I have to report that it was not difficult to find reasons to reject many of the possibilities. It was not easy to find a reason to make a strong recommendation. The name least likely to fail to match the present species is A. austrobulbosa, which, it happens, was described from South Australia; however, the only description of this species is limited:

http://www.amanitaceae.org?Amanita+austrobulbosa

Further collections and resulting dried material may help.

As a result of Kari’s post and a posting about A. sp-Ridley-2 on the MycoKey blog by Arthur Bennett, I revised and updated of the checklist for amanitas of Australia and New Zealand and added color coding to distinguish endemic and alien taxa. (I have some suspicions that at least one of the three limacellas is alien, but they all treated as endemic for the present.)

This checklist now has links (taxon by taxon) to the taxon pages of the WAO site:

http://www.amanitaceae.org?Australia+and+New+Zealand .

Very best,

Rod

Summary: New images.

Lamellulae (short gills) are rounded truncate to attenuate. This lends some support to the idea that this species belongs in sect. Validae. The shape of the bulb (somewhat pointed on the bottom and a bit turnip-like) may be of some help. I made a mistake, Karin, in not suggesting that you post the picture you sent me with the good view of the bulb. I think that may be a clue worth having on this observation.

Summary: Non-striate cap margin…

suggests this might fall in sect. Validae. The warts may have been yellow at first, too.

I’ve added two more images of this amanita…fingers crossed they provide an extra clue or two!

Here’s another image – apologies for the glare, but hopefully this clearer picture of the bulb will provide an extra clue.
