Amanita novinupta Tulloss & J.E. Lindgr.   amanitarita    (3)

Amanita pantherina (DC.) Krombh.   nathan    (1)
Recognized by sight: The cap color and ornamentation looks a lot more like something close to A. pantherina to me than A. novinupta. I’m not convinced that it’s actually staining red at the base.

Summary: Amanita novinupta?

Can’t be an Agaricus, John, with white spores!
Free gills fits both genera, tho. Cap color a bit odd, but stature, annulus, reddening at rooting base and lack of a volval remnants on bulb all fit, as do the hollow chambers w/in the stipe, a trait shared with its wicked cousin ocreata! Looks to be a well-aged specimen, so the odor could be from that.
Altho novinupta is more commonly associated with live oak, according to Arora it also can occur with conifers. Save the spore print, and check to see if they are amyloid!
