Notes: Here is another Galerina for you. Found on the side of the road in Mendocino, near the firehouse. It was in moss and grass, with pine debris.

These are small, and dried out, probably not a normal look for them. The stipes don’t seem to darken from the bottom in these, but the rest agrees with the monograph. They probably dried out here before they got old enough for the stipes to darken.

The first micro-shot displays the gill edge at 400x in Meltzer’s. Here the cheilocystidia can be seen, and they are non-capitate, more finger-like, with blunt ends. Also you can see that the spore are dextrinoid.

The second micro-shot is of the spores from the stipe apex in KOH at 1000x. Here you can see they are pointed, with a wrinkled surface and there is a plage on the middle one, in profile on the left side of the spore.

A rough spore measurement gives 10.8×5.8 um on 11 spores, which places this in G. badipes. Smith and Singer split some species based on the spore length, as a measurement on 2-spored or 4-spored basidia, with the shorter spores making a species a 4-spore basidia, and longer spores from a 2-spored basidia. Since these are clearly longer than 10 um, that makes this G. badipes and not G. cedretorum (which shares many of the same characters, except the fibrous veil zone).

So, with the incurved cap, fusoid-ventricose cheilo- and pleuro- cystidia, wrinkled, pointed, dextrinoid spores with a plage, white fibrous zone in middle of stipe, and spores longer than 10 um, that makes these G. badipes. The only difference here is the base of the stipes are not blackish brown, but they are little guys…
