When: 2007-10-02
Collection location: Diamond Lake, Douglas Co., Oregon, USA [Click for map]
Who: Ron Pastorino (Ronpast)
No herbarium specimen

Notes: There were many groups of this species that I saw in the area, most with the characteristic fissures on the cap with brownish flesh evident. but like with most Corts, my confidence in the ID is always tentative.

Summary: Looks good for Cortinarius traganus

Usually smells good when young and may be the same as Cortinarius pyriodora.
It gets a bit funky smelling when old but not nearly as bad as the “old goat” Cortinarius camphoratus

Summary: context color and odor are useful cues

When Michelle Seidl (a PNW cort researcher in Ammirati’s lab) came down to the Bay Area a few years back, she showed me a couple of traganus characteristics:
the context is orange, and the odor ranges from ripe pears (nice) to old goat(not so nice). Here’s a link to their lab: http://faculty.washington.edu/cort/
