Summary: Deprecate the old, propose the new

I think I have this all cleaned up, but anyone could have done it. I just when to the page for O. chioneus and hit ‘Deprecate’ and gave T. chioneus as the preferred name. I also added a comment referencing this discussion. All the observations were now getting listed on the name page, but the ones where T. chioneus had not been proposed where still favoring O. chioneus. I think that might be a bug that Jason already fixed, but to clean it up for now, I just proposed T. chioneus. When more than one synonym is given for an observation and only one is considered valid, then the valid one always wins.

Ok, but what to do? There are two other obs. on this site with Oligoporus chioneus, and we’re pretty sure its the same species, so it doesn’t make sense to have obs here for both.

Since it is the type species, then I would say these all just have to be Tyromyces, and the other two obs, should get changed to agree with this name.

Summary: Confusing and apparently not fully resolved.

As you noted in one of your observations, Index Fungorum recognizes Tyromyces chioneus. Also , if I read Tom Volk’s explanation correctly, Tyromyces represent white rotters and Oligoporus represent brown rotters. From what I read Tyromyces chioneus is a white rotter. Another complication seems to be that Tyromyces chiones is the type species for Tyromyces.
Yet another interesting item I ran across seems to indicate that in DNA studies, Tyromyces chioneus seems to be in the same clade with Laetiporus sulphureus and Sparassis crispa with Oligoporus species in an adjoining clade.

I thought this was one that moved to genus Oligoporus, or however you spell that. Although I’m sure I don’t know all the details on the Oligoporus/Tyromyces thing, much less compared to Polyporus. Something about type of hyphae involved and if it produce brown vs. white rot…
