Observation: Fungi sp. (8190)
|
When: 2008-06-12
Collection location:
Cypress Bayou Reservoir, Bossier Parish, Louisiana, USA [Click for map]
Who:
Ron Pastorino (Ronpast)
No herbarium specimen
Notes: These were growing on an embankment off a trail near mostly hardwoods.
I’ve tried to push them into the genus Gastroboletus but they don’t seem quite to fit and most of that genus seems confined to western montane habitats. Also they were mostly growing above ground. Should have saved them but a strong odor was developing and I didn’t have a good way of drying them in a hurry.
The caps were from 3.6-5.1cm across and the stems ranged from 5.5-8.0 cm high. The pore-like area was very small and there even may have been the start of a Hypomyces growth on some of them.
Would be nice if someone could “genusize” them??

Summary: Could be Gastroboletus
Would have to be young, and have Hypomyces growing on them. The tubes of adult Gastroboletus are much longer/distorted than the very young specimens. And I have never seen the tubes white or whitish, as in these photos. The last bunch I tried to dry became rank, and I had to put them outside, where the local oppossum seems attracted to them. Most odors attractive to oppossums are not attractive to me.

Summary: Not enough info
According to “North American Boletes”, T. tabacinus usually has a bulbous to equal stipe. These were all distinctly tapered. Due to the very aborted pore and tube development on these it is difficult to pin them down to a specific genus. Next time I’ll try to make more detailed notes.

Summary: Tylopilus
Did you consider Tylopilus tabacinus? Since there is no info, besides the photos, it is hard to place it in genus but the tubes look slightly pinkish.
