Observation: Amanita rhopalopus Bas (8665)

When: 2008-08-04
Collection location: Zaleski State Forest, Ohio, USA [Click for map]
Who: Dan Molter (shroomydan)
No herbarium specimen

Notes: This Amanita was smaller than the others found in the same area and it lacked a partial veil. Otherwise it looks identical to the mushrooms in 8664.

Used references: The Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Mushrooms; photos 169,170. Differs with your specimen in that the stem bruises reddish where handled; and one picture seems to show more of a chocolate/light brown gills than green gills. However, the spores should be greenish, so I have no problem with the gills and cap being a little gree too. I do not have this species in my area, have just seen photos of it. I would disagree with the name Amanita mostly because there is no volva to my eye.

Recognized by sight: Unfortunately, I can’t see the whole bulb. It should have been elongate and possibly kicked off to one side (dog-legged). The Greek name means “clubfoot”. Sure determination requires microscopy.

Summary: Cap warts and shaggy stem wrong for Chlorophyllum molybdites

Chlorophyllum molybdites has a smooth stem, so it can’t be that. The green tones in the photo are due to long exposure time in deep shade from green leaves.

Summary: Your photo does show a partial veil; easily lost/degraded in section lepidella.
