Used references: “This very rare variety differs from the type form by more brownish colours on cap and stem and smaller spores. Another variety – atrotomentosa – has still darker colours.” Reid measured at his collection a smaller spore size than the type variety: 5-6 × 3-4 µm. Ludwig measured at his own collection 5,5-7 × 3,5-4 µm. For var. aurantiaca he mentioned 5-7,5(-8) x 2,5-5 µm. Source: Ludwig, E. (2001): Pilzkompendium, Vol.1 – Descriptions. p.191

Summary: DNA update

I’m told the DNA for this matched H. aurantiaca.

Summary: DNA

I brought some dried specimens to Mike Davis to see if he was interested in doing some DNA on these, he said he will do it, but is not sure when yet. :)

Summary: Spores

According to boletales.com, H. aurantiaca has spores ranging “5–7 × 3.5–4.5 μm” and H. rufa, “Spores 5–7 × 3–4 μm”. This collection has the range 6 – 7 × 4 – 4.5 μm which seems to fit with H. aurantiaca more, so I will go with that for now.

Do either of these species have DNA work done on them yet?

Summary: Maybe not H. rufa

To add to Irene’s consternation, I wonder if H. rufa has been documented in the USA.

Summary: A very nice site that one

But I don’t think the genus Hygrophoropsis has been thoroughly investigated yet.. Is rufa merely a colour form with intermediates towards aurantiaca? Is H. olida really synonymous with H. morganii? – these are questions I’d like to have answers to.

Summary: H. rufa

I found a description and some pictures here (http://boletales.com/genera/hygrophoropsis/h-rufa/), it looks closer. Thanks for the corrections.
