That’s what I’m calling it for now.

I left the dogs with a friend and went back to Babcock State Park yesterday. Somebody had kicked them over, but the mushrooms were still there. :)

I’m making spore prints right now.

Nearby trees include several kinds of oak, maple, and rhododendron.

Smell: delicious – I’m half tempted to eat one of them.
Taste: nutty, not bitter.

I’m drying them out for deposit in Ohio University’s herbarium.

It stumped Jay Justice (not to mention the rest of us). Sent it this am to Halling. After that, it’s anybody’s guess! Four hours is a long way to go for a maybe, but we are all counting on you!!! Besides, there are sure to be other wonders to photograph and collect. ;)

Summary: It’s a four hour drive

and I’m stuck in Athens until Friday taking care of three dogs. They were growing in the middle of the path, lake view trail loop between the connector spur and the boat dock. Maybe they will be there Saturday when I return. Babcock State park has more mushrooms than any place I’ve ever seen. I also plan to collect samples of those big mysterious rag-veil amanitas.

Certainly collect some specimens for drying and storing away if you have not already. If they are gone by now, I encourage you to check back at that location for more.

Maybe go back when they are mature, and re-shoot, dry one? I couldn’t find them in the big Bessettes bolete book (fergeddabout seeing it in a more general field guide), but I did send your photo on to my Southern bolete guy, Jay Justice. Time might tell.
